Colour Psychology of La La Land
A4 digital book, Indesign and Photoshop
La La Land’s colour aesthetics are well known, and there are many authors who have published articles and videos to elaborate and analyse them.
I chose to discuss this point because my focus throughout the research and design was how colours affect mood swings, and how the lens uses the knowledge of colour aesthetics and colour psychology to express emotions. In La La Land, Mia wears a blue dress and stands in the darkness of the night, and the audience can feel the sadness at that moment, which is amazing, and it tells me that colour itself can affect people’s emotions. Most of the authors simply discuss just the aesthetics of the camera, they only discuss colour in regards to film design. That’s the starting point that sets me apart from them.
This Companion is for anyone interested in the use of colour in film design, but those enthusiastic on photography, film, and artists who want to get some new inspiration, will find this book a wealth of treasure. The goal is to make future films more deeply expressive and collaborative with colour psychology and colour aesthetics; to use colour to express life, and to make more content that the audience can relate to. The tone of the whole Companion is appreciation, education, and diversion.

Moodboard
6 Main Colours
The mood and tone are important for the direction and stability of my overall design trends. So, when it came to the production, I didn’t start on the plot of the film, but rather targeted the 6 chosen colours. I did a broad search for each one to capture the material that matched the expression of the film.
Out of this project, I created the below 6-colour Flipbook, which really enhances the experience.
